Yakult is a fermented milk probiotic containing lactic acid bacteria- Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota. It is marketed as dietary supplement drink that restore the balance of the beneficial bacteria in the gut. It is recommended to take 1-2 bottle of Yakult per day.

Probiotics is defined as live microorganism (bacteria or yeast), which when reaches the intestine in sufficient number exerts positive effect on health by improving indigenous microflora.

Lactobacillus casei is strictly fermentative Gram-positive bacteria, a member of the broad classification of lactic acid bacteria. This bacteria produces lactic acid as end-product of carbohydrate metabolism. Lactobacillus bacteria are used in fermented and non-fermented foods as these are able to inhibit bad bacteria that cause food spoilage. These are safe and non-pathogenic. 
Lactobacillus bacteria are used in food industry for the fermentation of foods. Some are also found in the gastrointestinal tract of healthy humans of all ages.
