Overview

The preparation of Ayurvedic ghee requires mainly three essential components viz. Durvadi Kera Thailam

Overview

It is mentioned in Chakradatta and Bhaishajya Ratnavali in Vrana shotha Roga Adhikara for the treatment of Vrana. Wound is known as Vrana in ayurveda. It includes abrasion (wearing away of the upper layer of skin as a result of applied friction force), haematoma (localized swelling filled with blood caused by a break in the wall of a blood vessel, blood clots and remains inside muscle/organ), bruise injury (discoloration and tenderness of the skin due to the leakage of blood from an injured blood vessel), contusion, fissure in ano, stab wounds, incised wounds, laceration (torn wound), abscess, cyst etc.

Durva or doob grass is main ingredient of this oil. Durvadi taila has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties due to which effectively helps in wound healing.

Kamadudha Rasa

Avipattikara Churna

Drakshadi Lehyam

Alsarex not only reduces the acid secretion but also strengthens the mucosal defence. Two tablets 2-3 times a day with a bland diet for three to six weeks.

Acidinol(BAN Lab)

Acidinol is one of the best herbal Ayurvedic medicine for treatment stomach acidity and disorders occurred due to acidity like stomach refluxes into the esophagus and cause heart burn. Take 1 tablet 3 times a days after meal or syrup 1-2 teaspoonful(s) three to four times as needed orally after every meal. In case of chronic acidity take this medicine for 4 weeks.

Soota Sekhar

Dhatura is an annual herb that occurs throughout the country. Its scientific name is Datura metel Linn (Synonym D. fastuosa L., D. alba Ramph; D. cornucopaea Hort.) and belongs to Family Solanaceae. In Ayurveda, its seeds, roots and dried whole plant are used for medicinal purpose.

Overview

Datura Herb

Dhatura leaves have antitumor, anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory properties. Its flowers are anti-asthmatic. The leaves, seeds and root are anti- catarrhal, febrifuge, anti-diarrhoeal, anti-dermatosis.

Ayurveda classifies Datura in Upavisha Varga (secondary toxic drugs). UpVisha varg is a category of herbs with toxic effect on body. As per Ayurveda, in small doses, Vish (poisons) are fast acting and effective medicines. So Datura is used for medicine preparation only after proper Shodhan or purification.

Ayurvedic properties of Datura

Kanak or Dhatura seeds contains alkaloids and fixed oil.

As per Ayurveda, Dhatura seeds are Madhura, Katu, Tikta, Kashaya (Rasa), Guru, Ruksha, Tikshna (Guna), Ushna (Virya), Katu (Vipaka) and Kaphahara, Varnya, Madakari, Vishahara, Krimihara, Vran-hara, Krimi-hara, Bhram-hara, Vamaka (Karma).

The whole Dhatura plant are Madhura, Katu, Tikta, Kashaya (Rasa), Guru, Ruksha, Tikshna (Guna), Ushna (Virya), Katu (Vipaka) and Kapha-hara, Varnya, Madakari, Agni-Vriddhikar (Karma).

Important Ayurvedic formulations

Hyoscine alkaloid

Various parts of Dhatura plants contains hyoscyamine and hyoscine alkaloids.

Hyoscine is the principal alkaloid of the leaves at all times.

Proportions of hyoscine and hyoscyamine in plant varies with age of the plant, duration of sunlight, light intensity, general climatic conditions, chemical sprays, hormones and certain other environmental factors.

Hyoscine alkaloid has depressant effect on the central nervous system. This alkaloid is used as the base for the hydrobromide salt which is used as a pre-anaesthetic, antisialagogue (diminishes or stops the flow of saliva), adjunct to general anaesthesia.

The alkaloid Hyoscine in large doses is a POISON that can cause delirium (Delirium is acutely disturbed state of mind characterized by restlessness, illusions, and incoherence) and coma.

Traditional Use of Dhatura

Dhatura is a medicinal herb and used traditionally to treat various ailments throughout the country. The seeds of Dhatura plant is used in treatment of leprosy in West Bengal and Rajasthan. In Rajasthan the leaves are used for treating Guinea worm disease (A parasitic disease caused by infection with the guinea worm). In traditional medicine, the leaves, roots and seeds are used in fever with congestion, insanity, diarrhoea, and skin diseases.

Dhatura has narcotic, acrid, anodyne, antispasmodic, intoxicating, and emetic properties. It is used in preparation of many medicines useful in treatment of fever, insanity, lumbago, sciatica, painful swelling and neuralgia.

WARNING

Dhatura is extremely poisonous plant. Toxic effect of Dhatura on body are dryness of mouth, intense thirst, increase in heart rate, and blurring of vision with prominent mydriasis, hallucinations, delirium, and loss of motor coordination which may further lead to coma and ultimately to death by respiratory failure.

In Ayurveda, the Dhatura is used only after proper Shodhan. Do not take any part of plant internally.

Mucilage is also helpful in absorbing mucous waste of intestinal tract. It is laxative that is helpful in constipation. It can heal ulcers and also reduces acid reflux. Mucilage has ability to flush the toxic substance from body and controlling of bad cholesterol.

Medicinal uses of Okra or Lady's finger fruit

Okra is Anti-Diabetic

Okra is an effective anti-diabetic herb. Diabetes, which is metabolic disorder is characterised by increase in blood sugar level. The increased blood sugar level has a negative effect on all body organs. It is very important to maintain blood sugar level in normal range. Okra or Bhindi can be helpful in doing so. Bhindi has hypoglycemic (lowering blood sugar level in blood) and hypolipidemic (reducing lipid concentrations in the serum) activities which causes lowering of increased blood sugar level in diabetes.

The aqueous extract of Okra has maximum anti-diabetic effect. For preparing the aqueous extract, few okra fruits are taken (5-7), washed and chopped. These cut pieces are soaked in water at night. Next morning, the pieces are squeezed so that the mucilage enters the water. This mucilage containing water is taken orally in morning, regularly for one month to control the elevated blood sugar level.

Okra Cures Constipation

Okra is rich in fibre and mucilage. The high fibre content makes okra a good laxative. Fibres causes sufficient level of water in stool and mucilage further softens bowel.

Okra for skin conditions

The okra has antimicrobial and emollient properties.

For psoriasis and burn injuries, the okra fruits are grinded to make paste. This paste is applied on affected area and kept for 2-3 hours. This should be done for fifteen days.

Distribution of Ulat Kambal

This plant is distributed through out India up to 1500 m. It is also found in Bangladesh, Pakistan and the adjacent countries.

About the plant

Devil’s Cotton is a shrub or a small tree which reaches height of 1.8 to 3.6 m. Although plant can grow up to height of 9 m in wild. The plant propagates through seeds and stem cuttings. The plant has small hairs that can cause dermatitis. This shrub requires fertile soil with good drainage and well distributed rainfall. The flowers are about 5 cm in diameter. These are dark red, purple or yellow in colour. The Seeds are many, small, blackish, covered with silky hairs

Ulat Kambal is a medicinal plant. Its root bark has emmenagogue properties. Emmenagogue are agent that stimulates or increases menstrual flow. The roots are used as uterine tonic and for regulation of menstrual flow. The fresh root-bark juice is useful in congestive and neuralgic forms of dysmenorrhoea, amenorrhoea, urinary trouble, bronchitis, broncho-pneumonia, carbuncles and poisonous boils.

The root of plant contains abromine (betaine), friedelin, abromasterol, abromasterol A, choline, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol and octacosanol.

Leaves of plant contains taraxerol and lupeol and useful in treating uterine disorders. Leaves are also useful in treatment of diabetes, rheumatic pain and sinusitis.

For medicinal purpose, the recommended dosage of leaf juice is 10-20 ml and root bark powder is 3-6 grams.

Medicinal uses of Devil’s Cotton (Abroma augusta)

Gynaecological Problems, Scanty Menstruation, Irregularity in Periods

The roots of Abroma augusta is taken and boiled in water for preparing decoction. For making decoction, 5 gram root is boiled in 400 ml water. This is cooked till water reduces to 100 ml. This is filtered and taken twice a day regularly.

It helps to balance hormones level and regulates menstruation.

Excessive bleeding during periods, pelvic pain during menstruation

The leaves of Abroma augusta tree are useful in treating over bleeding. For this purpose, extract 5 ml juice of Ulat Kambal leaves and drink 2-3 times a day. This will also cure pelvic region pain.

Female infertility due to unexplained reason

This tree is helpful in improving chances of conceiving in women, who are suffering from infertility due to unknown reasons, despite normal reports. For this purpose, all five parts(Panchang) of tree are collected. These are shade dried and then powdered. This powder is taken in amount of 5 grams with black pepper 1 grams. It is boiled in water and decoction is prepared. Regular intake of this decoction helps to improve chances of conceiving.

Acne are caused by aggravation ofPitta Dosha(Ayurvedic humor representing Fire) in her body, as evidenced by the inflammation in her boils as well as the problem of mild constipation. ThePitta had further impaired theRakta andMeda Dhatu (blood and fat tissues), producing toxins that blocked skin’s pores, leading to acne formation. Raktashodhan

Raktashodhan is Ayurvedic herbal medicine which comes in two forms tablet and syrup. it’s natural herbal ingredients purify blood, removes toxins and improves immunity. Raktashodhak has many herbs which are mentioned in Ayurveda to remove toxins and improve immunity. Dosage of syrup is 10 to 15 ml. twice a day with water. or as directed by the physician and if using tablets then take 1-2 tablets twice daily or as prescribed by physician.

Himalaya Septilin

Kumkumadi lepam

Hamdard Safi

Safi is used for blood purification and preventing skin problems.Safi purifies the blood from within by giving your liver, thyroid and the rest of your body the support they need and eliminating the toxins that usually cause acne and blemishes. Take Safi only for 1~2 months continually or consult some physician(Ayurvedic). Use safi as per uses direction pack, make sure to dilute safi as per instructions.

Hempushpa

Hempushpa ayurvedic medicine to cure women related health problems such as regulating periods, blood purification, irritability, improving appetite and general health. Please take 7 ml twice day after meals or as directed by the physician.

Acnovin Cream

Bhuiamlaki medicinal properties

The Bhuyamla plant is diuretic plant. It has ability to clear or open the natural ducts of the fluids and secretions of the body. The plant has astringent properties and causes contraction of skin cells and body tissues. This plant is used as single drug to treat jaundice. The plant has antiviral activity against hepatitis B virus. It has liver protecting activities which is supported by lab studies. It effectively repair CCl4 induced liver damage in rats.

Bhuiamla for liver Diseases

Bhuiamla is effective medicinal herb for treating liver diseases including Hepatitis B.

The plant shows marked anti-hepatitis B virus surface antigen activity in in-vivo and in-vitro lab studies.

In a clinical study, 37 patients with chronic viral hepatitis B, were treated with daily dose of 600mg of Bhuiamala for 30 days. 59% of the patients lost the HBsAg two weeks after the end of the treatment. HBsAg is the surface antigen of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It indicates current hepatitis B infection. From this study, the authors postulated that Phyllanthus niruri might inhibit proliferation of the virus by inhibiting replication of the genetic material of the virus.

Traditional uses of Phyllanthus amarus

Phyllanthus amarus or Bhui amla is used traditionally for treating variety of diseases. The hot water extract of whole plant on oral intake has fever reducing and laxative effect. The decoction is also useful in fever reduction. In treatment of jaundice whole plant is dried and pulverised to get powder that is taken with buttermilk. In case of loose motions, dysentery dried leaves infusion is given. In diabetes, hot water extract is useful. Fresh leaf juice or fresh root juice are taken orally for sexually transmitted disease STDs.

The plant is also used externally. For skin diseases, cuts, bruises the leaves juice is applied topically on affected part. The fruit is used externally for tubercular ulcers scabies and ringworm.

Harar is Rasayana drug of Ayurveda. Rasayan are those, which gives youthfulness, and longevity. Description of tree

Evergreen, branched, medium to large deciduous tree with a height up to 30 m; Leaves are 10-30 cm long elliptical with an acute tip and cordate base; Flowers: short stalked, monoecious, dull white to yellow with a strong unpleasant odour, found in simple terminal spikes or short panicles; Fruits: 3-6 cm long and 1.3-1.5 cm broad yellowish-green ovoid drupes containing one oval seed;

Depend ending on variety of fruits obtained from tree, T. chebula is classified in 7 types. But nowadays, only two varieties, Badi and Choti Harad are used in drug preparation.

Haritaki tree is found throughout India. It is also found in neighbouring countries, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh, China Egypt, Iran and Turkey.

Properties and Action of Haritaki Fruits

Rasa: Madhura (sweet), Amla (sour), Katu (pungent), Tikta (bitter), Kashya (astringent)

Haritaki is a useful herb to treat diseases that occur due to derangement of Vata-Kapha dosha.

Haritaki or Terminalia chebula contains several phytochemical (chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants) constituents, including chebulic acid, gallic acid, ellagic acid, tannic acid, amino acids, flavonoids like luteolin, rutins and quercetin etc. These chemicals gives the tree its therapeutic values. The fruits of tree are antioxidant, carminative, astringent, expectorant, gentle purgative, laxative, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal.

Uses of Terminalia chebula

Haritaki is used in treatment of numerous diseases. The Anupan or fluid vehicle for taking medicine depends on the disease to be treated. In case of disease is due to derangement of vata or Vata dosha, it is used with ghee, for pitta dosha with sugar and for kapha dosha with rock salt.

It is a rasayana phal that promotes good health. It improves appetite and digestion. It is a liver stimulant and laxative. The intake of harad fruit with meals helps in proper digestion, and thus improves health.

Haritaki intake with honey and ghee cures anaemia.

Haritaki is useful in eye diseases, swelling, joint pain, and fever. It has astringent action due to which it stops bleeding from tissues.

Haritaki fruits are also used externally. The topical application of dried fruits paste on scalds, ulcers, wounds, and skin diseases gives relief in condition. It also prevents accumulation of pus. The paste is also applied on swelling, inflammations and in conjunctivitis. Haritaki oil application on burn injuries helps in wound healing. The gargles with harad fruit decoction give excellent results in stomatitis and problems of the throat. The fine powder of haritaki is used as tooth powder.
