Why Young Children Require Iron Supplements

$
0
0

Anaemia is very common in young kids due to inadequate iron intake from diet and rapid growth. During this growing period children require iron for normal motor function, growth, proper brain function and metabolism.

If a child is anaemic or suffers from iron deficiency than that may result in delay in physical and mental growth. There can be delay in normal functions such as walking, talking, and brain maturation and even a low intelligence quotient, or IQ. In severe cases of iron deficiency there can be behavioural, developmental problems and retarded mental function. If a baby suffers from anaemia during infancy than that may cause irreversible effect on cognitive performance.

Therefore it is very important to make sure the child does not suffer from this from early age. A proper diet ensures correct iron intake. But in certain age group children are at higher risk. Such groups are breast fed babies, fussy eater and young children who just want to drink milk and avoid solid foods. In all such cases iron supplements is required.

Dosage of Iron Supplements

The dosage of iron supplementation is dependent on body weight and age of child. Low-birth weight and premature infants are at higher risk of anaemia, should be given 2 mg/kg/day of elemental iron divided into 1-2 doses for anaemia prevention.

A baby in age group of 3-6 months who is exclusively breast-fed require iron supplementation as breast-milk contains less iron. In age of 3 months to 2 year iron supplementation is recommended due to the fact that more than forty percent of babies in this group are anaemic. The dose of iron supplementation is 2-3 mg/kg/day of elemental iron divided into 1-2 doses for preventing anaemia.

Feronia-XT Drops for iron supplementation

$
0
0

Feronia-XT Drops are oral drops indicated for preventing and treating iron and folic acid deficiency in babies. The composition of Feronia-XT oral drops is ferrous ascorbate (equivalent to elemental iron) 10 mg, folic acid 100 mcg.

Dosage of Feronia-XT Drops

The dosage of iron drops for preventing iron deficiency anemia is dependent on age and weight of child. A healthy normal weight child should be given 2-3 mg/kg/day of elemental iron starting at 4 months of age. If child suffers from anemia then dose is higher than this and exact dosage is prescribed by doctor after proper tests and level of deficiency.

The iron supplementation should be given an hour before or two hours after the feeds. If child has tendency to vomit then it can be given with feed but absorption will decrease.
There are some possible side-effects such as nausea, constipation, black stool, upset stomach etc.

Iron is essential trace mineral for our body. This mineral is component of haemoglobin in red blood cells and myoglobin in muscle cells and responsible for carrying oxygen. Iron is also part of the enzymes and required in body to produce new cells, amino acids, neurotransmitters and hormones. The iron requirement for adult male is 8 mg each day and for female is 18 mg each day. The iron which is obtained from the food is of two types, heme and nonheme iron.

Heme iron or Non-vegetarian source of Iron

Heme iron is present in non-vegetarian foods. This is bound into animal tissues or haemoglobin and myoglobin of meat and gets easily absorbed in body. The source of heme iron is meat such as steamed clams (molluscs), poultry, fish, pork, sardines, mussels, oysters, seafood etc.

Non-heme iron or Vegetarian Source of iron

This type of iron is present in fruits, vegetables, dried beans, nuts and grain products. The excellent source of this iron is green peas, spinach, beans, lentils, carrot and other green leafy vegetables. Iron is also present in cooked potatoes, eggplant and tomatoes in lesser amounts.

Heme iron gets more efficiently absorbed in body compared to any other source of iron. A person who is vegetarian and depends on diet for daily iron requirement, need to consume approximately 1.8 times the daily normal requirement.

There are certain food items which decrease iron absorption in body. Drinking of tea or coffee along with meals, antacids, excessive high fibre food intake and taking calcium and iron supplements together, are such few factors. So for better iron absorption the intake timing of calcium and iron must be different. For better absorption of iron from vegetarian source, vitamin C should be included in diet. Vitamin C or ascorbic acid can be obtained from citrus fruits, lemons, grapefruits, tomatoes, broccoli and strawberries. Also for preparing iron rich vegetables iron pans, cast iron skillets should be used.
