Techniques to cure hiccups

Hiccups are noisy intake of air caused due to involuntary contraction of diaphragm. It is not harmful abut uncomfortable. Hiccups may be caused due to overeating, alcoholic beverage, carbonated drinks, swallowing air, stress or some medical condition.

Here are few tips to get rid of hiccups

  • Take deep full breath and stop for few seconds. Do not exhale and again take small breath. Repeat again without exhaling. After few such breathes exhale. This builds air pressure and thus helps to cure hiccups.
  • Take deep breath then exhale forcefully.
  • Slowly drink water.
  • Take cardamom powder with honey.
  • Put one teaspoon of sugar in mouth and swallow.

It is better to seek professional advice if you suffer from hiccups for more than 2 days.

Agastya, Agati or Sesbania is tree native to India. It is found throughout India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. It has tamarind tree like leaves and big flowers.  Its leaves contain fibre, iron, calcium, carbohydrate, protein, fibre, fat, vitamin B1, vitamin A and vitamin C and essential amino acids etc.

Here are few remedies that can be done at home using Augastya to cure various ailments.

  • Abdominal gas, indigestion, stomach disorders in new-born and children

    Take white Agastya flowers and extract its juice. Give 1-2 teaspoons to baby to cure abdominal gas and irritability. It also causes bowel motion in baby.
  • Physical weakness, sexual debility, digestive problems

    Prepare Gulkand of its flower and take regularly to cure weakness of any type.
    Or dry its flower and grind to make powder. Take 1 spoon powder with equal amount misri and milk.
  • Leucorrhoea (Shwet pradar or white discharge), Raktapradar

    This is herbal remedy to cure leucorrhoea. Take Agastya dried flower powder with milk regularly.
  • Infection in uterus, itching burning sensation in vagina

    Take Agastya leaves and extract its juice. Soak cotton in this juice and put inside vagina. This cures vaginal infection.
    Or boil Agastya leaves with Neem leaves and add alum. Use this water to wash vagina.
  • Improving eyesight, eye related problem

    Extract Agastya leaves juice and put few drops in eyes to cure eye related problems.
  • Migraine, sinusitis, catarrh, cough

    Extract Agastya leaves or flower juice and put few drops in nose  to cure migraine. 
  • Constipation

    Boil leaves and flowers of Agastya in water. Cook for few minutes, filter and dink.
  • Ulcerative colitis, inflammation in intestine, piles

    Extract Agastya leaves juice and take 3-4 spoonful empty stomach in morning  and evening. Do not eat for an hour after taking the extract.
  • Fever of all type, visham jwar (intermittent fever), food poisoning

    Prepare decoction of Agastya leaf with few leaves of tulsi and black pepper by boiling in 400 ml water till volume reduces to one fourth. Take twice a day.

Extract Karela fruit or Karela leaves juice and drink regularly to purify blood and cure various skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema etc. It is also helpful in treating liver problems, jaundice, improving liver function.
Also external application of mixed juice of Karela leaves with Neem leaves is effective in treating itching, eczema.

Gambhari ( gmelina arborea Roxb)

For treating Urticaria or sheet pitta mix Gambhari fruit powder with misri (1:1 ratio) and take regularly.

Insomnia or sleeplessness is sleep disorder in which person is unable to sleep at night. This affects person's day to day life. Lack of sleep causes fatigue, irritability, poor quality of life and other ailments in body. There are numerous reasons for this sleep disorder. The common reasons for sleeplessness (anidra in hindi) include psychological, social, stress, anxiety, phobia, medical condition, illness etc.
Ayurveda considers this problem result of imbalance of vata. Aggravated vata (wind) causes various health problems including this condition.    For treatment of insomnia it is necessary to cure underlying reason.

Natural treatment of insomnia

  • Ashwagandha churna (1/2 tsp) with honey at night is a traditional remedy for good sleep.
  • Drink Brahmi tea or take Brahmi vati at night.
  • Massage scalp with herbal oil.
  • Drink Ayurvedic preparation Draksasava with water.
  • Amla juice is also good for constipation and relaxing mind. Drink this juice 25-50 ml before going to bed.
  • Have a nutritious diet with plenty of pulses, fruits and vegetables. Avoid refined flour, cheese, junk foods that cause constipation. Vitamin B and C are necessary for nervous system and both are water soluble. Therefore maintain daily requirement of body by having appropriate diet.
  • Drink a glass of lukewarm milk before going to bed.
  • Regularly do panayam (deep breathing) twice a day. This supplies fresh oxygen to mind and body that helps in relaxation. This calms mind and cures tension and stress.
  • Regularly do exercise such as walking, jogging etc.
  • Avoid sleeping during day time.

Medicinal plants are very useful in controlling diabetes. There are certain herbs which are traditionally used for maintaining blood sugar level in Indi. These can be used by individuals suffering from diabetes or are pre diabetic who are at increased risk of developing diabetes in future. Methi (Trigonella foenum-graecum)

Methi improves glycemic control and decreases insulin resistance in diabetes. Fenugreek seeds contain an amino acid which increases glucose stimulated insulin release by pancreas. Its regular use decreases blood glucose levels and improves glucose metabolism.  You can use fenugreek seeds in two ways. You may soak one spoon methi seeds in water at night. Next day chew these seeds. Methi sprouts can also be taken. Or grind methi seeds to make powder. Take one teaspoonful daily in morning.

Kala jeera (Bunium persicum)

Kala jeera has hypoglycemic activity and it helps in managing blood sugar level. Take (1/2 tsp) after meal.

Chirata (Swertia chirayita)

Chirata stimulates insulin release from pancreas.
Prepare decoction of Chirayata in water and take for 2 weeks.

Amla (Emblica officinals)

Prepare a powder by mixing equal amount of amla churna and haldi. It is helpful in reducing fasting sugar.

Karela (Momordica charantia)

Karela has antidiabetic and antihyperglycemic activities.
Drink karela juice (1/2 cup) in morning.

Neem (Azadirachta indica)

Neem leaves has anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, antimalarial, antifertility, hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects.

Chew 5 Neem leaves in the morning.

Tulsi or Holy basil (Ocimum sanctum)

Tulsi leaves show reduction in fasting blood glucose, uronic acid, total amino acid, total cholesterol and triglyceride.   Tulsi leaves also have antiasthemitic, antistress, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antitumor, gastric antiulcer activity, antioxidant, antimutagenic and immunostimulant activities.
