What is Guggulu

Guggulu is obtained from Indian Bdellium or Gum Guggul tree. It is an oleo gum resin exuded by plant during harsh summer. To obtain resin, circular incisions are made on the main stem. Through these incisions, aromatic fluid exudes that quickly solidifies to form a golden brown or reddish brown agglomerate. The dried resin has a bitter aromatic taste and a balsamic odour. This is guggulu which is used for medicinal purpose.

Ayurvedic uses of Guggul

Guggulu is anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, anti-cholestrolaemic and anti-obesity. It is one of the best natural substance for treating arthritis, hyper-cholesterol, bronchitis, cystitis, debility, diabetes. It is also useful in reducing obesity.

In Ayurveda, guggulu is used to prepare large number of medicine that are indicated in treatment of Amavata (Arthritis), Kustha, Prameha, Vatavyadhi, Granthi, shotha (swelling), Gandmala, and Medo roga. It is considered Diyva Oushadi.

Guggul has blood purifying and rejuvenating properties. It detoxifies body and helps in curing skin diseases which occurs due to accumulation of toxins. Guggul improves body immunity and regulates lipid level. It is a natural product to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

For treating these ailments you will need guggul, honey and lime juice. Take one gram or one fourth teaspoon of guggul powder with honey and lime juice once a day, in morning empty stomach.

Anorexia, loss of appetite, indigestion

Guggul is hot in potency and stimulates bile production. It is very helpful in improving metabolism and digestion. For treating digestive troubles, one gram or one fourth teaspoon of guggul powder should be taken with fifty ml water, half an hour before having meal.

Obesity

Guggul is used in Ayurveda for weight-loss. It does so by increasing the body’s metabolic activity (by improving thyroid function);increasing the body’s fat-burning activity;and augmenting thermogenesis (heat production). It increases levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and lowers serum low-density lipoprotein and very low-density lipoprotein (LDL and VDRL). Clinical studies have shown decrease in total cholesterol up to 30% in 12 weeks and a reduction of LDL by 35% and increase in HDL by 20% in 3 months.

For weight loss, one gram of guggul should be taken with hot water 3-4 times a day.

Ulcers, wound

Guggulu is used topically to treat ulcers and wounds. It is mixed in coconut oil and applied on the affected skin area.

Weak and spongy gums, pyorrhoea, ulcerated throat, teeth cavity

Guggulu has antiseptic and astringent properties. You can use it to treat oral problems such as gum weakness, sponginess, pyorrhoea etc. For this purpose dissolve two grams of guggulu in a glass of warm water and use this as mouth wash and gargle.

Guggul is natural product and can be taken safely for long time without side-effects. It has been used safely in clinical trials for up to 6 months. Some evidence also suggests it can be used safely up to one-two years. Since guggul stimulates blood flow in menstruation, decreases size of uterus, ovary (in lab test on rats,) so its use should be avoided during pregnancy. Guggul affects thyroid function so use cautiously in underactive or overactive thyroid.

Overview

Sesame is one of the oldest oil crop that is cultivated in various parts of the world. In India, it is cultivated in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. Sesame is an annual crop that attain height between 1.6 and 3.3 ft. Its seeds are small in size, oval in shape and slightly flattened. These are rich in oil and contains about 35 - 57 % oil depending on variety. For oil extraction purpose, roasted and unroasted seeds are used. In India, traditional way to extract oil from seed is using Ghani. Ghani is big traditional pestle and mortar is driven by bullocks. Unroasted clean and dehulled seeds are milled and filtered to get the oil. Commercially oil is extracted using cold hydraulic presses.

Composition of Sesame oil

There are many varieties of sesame viz. black, white, brown etc. So the sesame oil composition differs depending on variety, size, origin, colour of seed.

This oil has less than 20% saturated fatty acid, mainly palmitic (7.9-12%) and stearic (4.8-6.1%) acids. Oleic acid (35-50%) and linoleic acid (35-50%) constitute more than 80% of the total fatty acids in sesame oil.

Health benefits of Til Taila or Sesame oil

In Ayurveda, Til or sesame oil is considered best among all vegetable oils. For medicinal purpose black til oil is mainly recommended. Good quality sesame oil can be used both internally and externally. It is one of the best oil that can be applied on Vata Vyadhis such as arthritis, rheumatism, joint swelling and similar conditions. Its internal use is great for improving health, iron level, controlling cholesterol, managing heart diseases, and improving strength. As per Ayurveda, it is bitter (Rasa: tiktha), heavy, oily, easily penetrable (Guna: guru, snigdha, sookshma), hot (Virya: ushna), digestive and gives strength. This medicine is indicated in treatment of Medoroga or Obesity. In a clinical study, Vyoshadi Guggulu and Haritaki churna were given to a selected group to evaluate the efficacy of these two Ayurvedic medicines on obesity. The treated group age ranged from 16-65 years and duration of treatment was three months. The dose of Vyoshadi guggulu was 3 tablets (each of 500 mg) and Haritaki powder was given 3 gm with lukewarm water both before meals. The result found significant improvement in B.M.I., sr triglyceride levels, waist circumference and other clinical features. The combination also gave relief in allied symptom of obesity such as breathlessness, confusion, paraesthesia and fatigue.

This medicine is also given to treat rheumatism or amavata, arthritis and diseases that occur due to aggravation of Kapha.

Take 12 – 24 ml. one or two times a day after meal. You can mix equal quantity of water if required.

Cinnamon tree

Cinnamon tree has deeply veined ovate leaves. The leaves are dark green underneath. Bark and leaves of tree are aromatic. The flowers are small yellowish to white in colour and have unpleasant odour. The tree also bears dark purple berries. The tree grows to a height of 6-8 meters. The inner bark of tree is collected and used as spice.

Medicinal Properties of Cinnamon Bark

Home Remedies of Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a useful medicinal spice. You can use it as home remedy to treat many common ailments. Here is given, how to use dalchini for treatment of cough, diarrhoea, acne, tastelessness, sleeplessness etc.

Cold and cough

  1. Mix pinch of cinnamon powder with 1 spoon of honey and take it 3 times a day to relive cough.
  2. Prepare tea by boiling half teaspoon ginger, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder and one clove in one cup water. Boil for few minutes. Filter and add honey. Drink hot few times a day.
  3. Take 2-3 grams of cinnamon powder with honey, two times a day.

Diarrhoea, loose motion

  1. For diarrhoea treatment, cinnamon or dalchini is taken with sonth, jeerak and honey. Take equal amount of powdered ginger, cumin seeds and Dalchini. Make a thick paste by adding honey. Eat 1 teaspoon of it three times a day.
  2. Take 3 gm cinnamon powder with water two times a day.

Loss of taste:Make a paste of honey and dalchini. Rub this paste on tongue and keep for few minutes.

Tooth ache:Mix cinnamon powder and honey in 1:5 ratio and apply at area of tooth ache

For hair fall:Mix cinnamon powder and honey with warm olive oil and apply on scalp and wash after 15 minutes.

Bad breadth:Chew cinnamon or boil cinnamon powder one teaspoon in 150 ml water and use as mouthwash.

Acne and black heads:Mix cinnamon with lemon juice and apply on acne and black heads.

Improving complexion:Mix honey and cinnamon powder and apply on face. Keep on face till it dries. Wash with plain water.

Memory improvement:Mix 1 gram cinnamon powder and honey. Take this every night.

Hoarseness and aphonia:Take a glass of water add cinnamon powder and black pepper, boil it and take with honey.

Insomnia or sleeplessness:Boil 2 grams cinnamon powder in one cup water for five minutes. Add honey and drink before going to bed.

Arthritis pain:Take 1 tbs cinnamon powder with 2/3 water and 1/3 honey and make paste and apply at place of pain.

Impaired or weak digestion:Cinnamon is a very good remedy for treating digestive problems. For treating digestive weakness oral intake of Cinnamon power in dose of 2-3 grams is useful.

Botanical name of fenugreek plant is Trigonella foenum-graecum Linn. and belongs to Fabaceae/Papilionaceae family.

There are two species of the genus Trigonella viz. Trigonella foenum graecum (common methi) and Trigonella corniculata (Kasuri methi).

Fenugreek plant is an annual herb, 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are light green, pinnately trifoliate. Flowers are white or yellowish white and axillary. Fruits are legumes, 5-7.5cm long, narrow, curved, tapering with a slender point and containing 10-20 deeply furrowed seeds per pod.

Fenugreek Seeds or Methi daana constituents

Fenugreek seeds are bitter, mucilaginous, aromatic, carminative, tonic, diuretic, thermogenic (warming), galactagogue (stimulates breast milk), astringent (constricts tissues), emollient, anti-rheumatic, CNS depressant and anti-implantation. When dry seeds are soaked in water they become mucilaginous. The seeds contains several Alkaloid, Saponins and Mucilage.

Alkaloids: Trimethylamine, Neurin, Trigonelline, Choline, Gentianine, Carpaine and Betain.

Amino acids: Isoleucine, 4-Hydroxyisoleucine, Histidine, Leucine, lysine, L-tryptophan, Argenine.

Saponins: Graecunins, fenugrin B, fenugreekine, trigofoenosides A-G.

Steroidal sapinogens: Yamogenin, diosgenin, smilagenin, sarsasapogenin, tigogenin, neotigogenin, gitogenin, neogitogenin, yuccagenin,saponaretin.

Flavonoids: Quercetin, rutin,vetixin isovetixin.

Fibers: Gum, neutral detergent. fiber

Other: Coumarin, lipids, vitamins, minerals;Mucilage 28 %;proteins 22 %;fixed oil 5 %.

Ayurvedic Properties and Action on body

As per Ayurveda, fenugreek seeds have following properties.

Rasa: Tikta

Guna: snigdha (unctuous)

Veerya: Ushna (hot)

Vipaka: Katu

Action on body: Fenugreek seeds are dipana. Deepan means digestive stimulant that improves digestive fire and helps in better digestion.

Seeds are useful in reducing vitiated Kapha dosha and Vata dosha. Kapha can be understood as mucous with qualities such as heavy, cold, moist, static, smooth and soft.

Scientifically proven activities of Fenugreek seeds

Antidiabetic and hypoglycaemic effect: Fenugreek seeds have blood sugar lowering effect. This may be due to presence of various phytochemicals (galactomannan-rich soluble fiber, amino acid 4-hydroxyisoleucine) in seeds. The amino acid present in seeds causes direct pancreatic β-cell stimulation. A study of alloxan-induced diabetic mice has shown that the hypoglycaemic activity of dialysed fenugreek seed extract was comparable to that of insulin.

Demulcent: The aqueous extract of fenugreek seeds has demulcent (relieving inflammation or irritation) properties. In an experiment done on rats, it promoted healing of gastric ulcers. It also exhibited a smooth muscle relaxing effect in rabbits without affecting either the heart or blood pressure.

Blood cholesterol lowering: The oral intake of fenugreek seeds reduces cholesterol level. This may be due to interaction of saponins and bile acids, resulting in formation of large micelles which are not absorbed in digestive tract, this further results in increased faecal bile acid and cholesterol excretion.

Blood lipids lowering: The fibrous fraction of seeds causes a reduction in blood lipids.

Seeds also possess Anticancer, Anti-Inflammatory, Antiseptic, Aphrodisiac, Astringent, Emollient, Expectorant, Anthelmintic, Wound healing, Gastro protective and Antioxidant properties. World Health Organisation WHO recommends use of fenugreek seeds in adjuvant therapy for diabetes mellitus, anorexia, also in hypercholesterolemia (excess of cholesterol in the bloodstream).

Medicinal uses of Fenugreek seeds(Methi Daana)

Fenugreek seeds are used in diabetes, high cholesterol, loss of appetite, flatulence, dyspepsia, colic, diarrhoea, dysentery, enlargement of liver and spleen. The seeds have galactagogue effect and used for increasing breast milk. These are also given puerperal tonic.

Home remedies of Methi for treatment of diseases

Diabetes: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that causes rise in blood sugar level and lipid level (hyperlipidemia). Fenugreek has both hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects. Scientific study has observed significant decrease in serum triglyceride and cholesterol in hyperlipidaemic patients when treated with fenugreek seed powder.

Fenugreek is very effective in controlling diabetes as it seeds works in diabetes by stimulating synthesis or secretion of insulin from pancreatic cells. Hypocholesterolaemic (Cholesterol reducing effect) activity of fenugreek seeds may be due to its insulin mimetic activity.

For reducing cholesterol: For reducing serum cholesterol level, take methi seeds and soak in water at night. Eat these soaked seeds two times a day.

Controlling high blood pressure: For high blood pressure management take fenugreek seeds and Anethum sowa (dill seeds) in equal amount. Grind them and make a fine powder. Take this powder in dose of two teaspoonful twice a day with fresh water.

Allergic rhinitis: Fenugreek seeds are dry in nature and hot in potency. These are helpful in reducing mucous. In cold, cough, hay fever and other similar conditions, soak fenugreek seeds in water for few hours. Then boil in water and drink hot, two times a day.

Diarrhoea, loose motion, dysentery: For diarrhoea treatment, fry dried seeds and make powder. Take 1 teaspoonful of this powder with honey, 2-3 times a day.

Asthma: For asthma, first boil the seeds. Then grind them to make paste. Add honey and take twice a day. Take for one month.

Arthritis, joint pain, keeping joints fit: The seeds have anti-rheumatic properties. Methi seed powder when taken in dose of 6 grams twice a day, with water, gives relief in joint pain.

Hair growth, preventing hair fall, dandruff: Prepare paste of methi leaves and apply on scalp.

How to eat fenugreek

Fenugreek or methi can be consumed in many ways. The leaves can be cooked as vegetable. Paratha can be made by kneading methi leaves in atta. The seeds can be powdered and taken in dose of 6 grams. The seeds can be sprouted and chewed as salad. Fenugreek tea can be prepared with seeds.

Tea prepared from fenugreek seeds is good for stomach related problems and respiratory tract infections. In early stage of respiratory infections (bronchitis, flu, sinusitis, catarrh, pneumonia), fenugreek tea causes sweating, helps body to fight better against infection and shortens duration of illness.

Side effects and Caution for Oral intake of fenugreek

Fenugreek is safe to use and exhibits no side effects when taken in proper therapeutic dosages. But in some individuals, it increase the risk of bleeding. It is contraindicated in pregnancy due to its oxytocic and uterine stimulant actions. Oxytocic means a drug that induces labour by stimulating contractions of the muscles of the uterus. Traditionally, seeds are used for easy delivery.

Fenugreek should be avoided by individuals with peanut allergies. Since fenugreek seeds contain several pharmacologically active constituents, so eat it in recommended doses and avoid excessive intake.

Medicinal uses of Ivy-Gourd

Whole plant of Coccinia Indica is used for medicinal purpose. The leaves, fruit and roots show anti-diabetic effect.

Plant leaves are used to treat ring worms, scabies, sinuses, UTI and respiratory ailments. Leaves have cooling effect on body and causes sweating which helps to reduce fever.

Plant stem has anti-spasmodic, expectorant and anti-diabetic action on body. The fruits are eaten as vegetable and useful in curing tongue sores. In traditional medicine system whole plant is used to treat variety of ailments. The fruits are useful in biliousness and diseases of blood. The leaves paste is applied externally on skin diseases. Coccinia indica is used in Ayurveda and Siddha for treatment of diabetes. It has blood sugar lowering effect on body. For lowering blood sugar, various parts of plant viz. root, fruit, leaves and stem are used. The juice of root/ leaves/fruits are given in doses of 6 teaspoonful, thrice a day. Or chew two raw Kovai fruits.

The active principle (with Insulin like activity) which is responsible for anti-diabetic effect is slow acting. So the visible effect is obtained only after a month of treatment. Therefore for controlling high sugar level and high lipid level in blood use this for longer duration.

Laxative

Laxative or purgative are medicines that stimulates evacuation of bowel.

For this purpose, the root bark powder of plant is given in doses of 2 teaspoonful before going to bed with hot water.

Sores on tongue

The green fruits of plant are used for treating tongue sores. Chewing fruits helps to get relief from tongue sores.

Itches, skin abscesses, insect stings

The leaves are grinded to make paste. This paste is applied externally on affected area.

Excess body heat

In case of excessive body heat, extract five teaspoon juice of ivy-gourd leaves and drink with a glass of water, thrice a day for three days.

Urine Blockage

Take 2 teaspoon root and boil in 150 ml water till volume reduces to half. Filter and drink.

  5. Divya Udaramrit vati, take 1 tablet after meals with water.
  6. Divya bael churna, take 1 spoon of after meal with water
  7. Divya Sarkalp kwath, make decoction and take 1 spoon empty stomach daily in morning.
  8. Himalaya Shallaki is found very effective if taken 350 mg(2-3 capsule) thrice daily for 6 weeks.
  9. Nicotine patch are very effective for this diseases.

Food Guideline for person suffering from ulcerative colitis

It is important to make dietary changes in ulcerative colitis. A person suffering form this condition must avoid spices, seasonings, sauces, meat, fish, eggas, sugar.
