Looz syrup is prepared from Lactulose which is a synthetic, man-made, disaccharide sugar prepared from fructose and galactose. This sugar is not absorbed by humans due to lack of enzymes. But it can be digested by colon bacteria to form lactic acid and acetic acids.

This metabolism of lactulose causes acidification (lower pH) and increase of osmotic pressure inside colon.  This further draws water from other part of body to colon promoting peristalsis, softening of stool and fermentative diarrhoea. Thus causing evacuation of bowel.

Composition of Looz syrup: 10 gm of Salt Lactulose

Looz syrup is used to soften stool and treat constipation. It is also used in liver diseases to reduce ammonia that can be build up in blood.

Looz syrup dose in adults is 15-30 ml daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses which can be gradually adjust according to response. The side-effects of this medicine are diarrhoea, gas, bloating, and cramps.

Note: This medicine should not be used in person suffering from galactosaemia, intestinal obstruction, and low galactose diet (Diet with low or no milk product).

This medicine comes under Category B, for Pregnancy Category (US FDA). Category B implies, animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a foetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women.
